Canoa Baiana (dugout)

Canoa Baiana is sometimes mentioned as the “mother” of all other dugout canoes in Brazil. It is found in Bahia and has been built for centuries since African slaves came to Brazil. They are built from large tree logs, carved with total precision from a trunk of Piquiá tree. They have a long overhang in both bow and stern. The Canoa Baiana can also be found with a sprit, crab claw or square latin sail rigs.  It is almost always painted with strong colors and black.
