Batera & Bateira

Batera and Bateira are the general name of a simple boat on the southeast coast of Brazil with no specific characteristic or design but recognized from the flat bottom and straight lines, made from plywood or planks.

The names are not properly used sometimes, but based on findings, the most common follow below.

The Batera usually has no rudder and is used either with oars or a paddle or a small outboard engine as a working boat for short distances, small fishing or to reach anchored boats.

The Bateira is a similar boat to Batera, a more sophisticated construction with ribs and heavier wood planks, a high bow, longer up to 5 meters, used with oars, with a transom for outboard engine or used with an inboard engine for fishing purposes.
