Batelão or Regatão is a typical Amazon barge boat with a low draft and wide beam powered by a small outboard engine used almost horizontally. They are covered with wood planks and move in very shallow waters to transport goods.
Regatão comes from the name of the boat owner and trader (hawker) who sells goods for riverside people. They trade goods like cheap perfume, radios, tools, beverages, and food as rice and beans. In change, they collect fresh fish, live animals, fruits and craftwork.
