The Pupunha is the heart of the palm, called Palmito de Pupunha in Portuguese which is well known and consumed by native populations of the Amazon, being used for centuries in their food.

The Pupunheira (Bactris gasipaes) is the palm tree which can grow to 20 meters and is native to the rainforests.

pupunha2Many species of birds feed on this Pupunha fruit, notably macaws, parrots and parakeets. Some of these are endemic species, which are in danger of extinction.
